The first step to allowing a 350-unit apartment complex
to be built in the New England Business Center was
taken this week when selectmen unanimously approved the developer's application.
A "friendly 40B," the developer agrees to work with the town and neighbors to make the project as attractive and nonintrusive as possible, and the town is allowed to count all 350
units toward its affordable housing stock. nearly doubling
Needham's current 4 percent rate.
Even neighbors in the Riverview Park area who were wary of the proposal when it first came up now seem sufficiently
trustful of Cabot, Cabot & Forbes and excited about one resident called an ''urban village" in their own backyard, with
shops and a cinema.
We applaud the town for creating a significant number of affordable units in Needham, and we urge the developer to listen
to the neighbors and build something that benefits the entire town.
